The Eagle controls its own destiny!!
As I was growing up my Father was always full of words of wisdom!! Some brilliant some not so brilliant!!
He always wanted me to push myself to be something different, If I am honest I have forgotten most of his wordly sayings, except for this and it wasn’t so much of a speech, he gave me this poem, I am not sure who it is by I tried a quick search on the internet to no avail.
It continues to be something I try to live by, sometimes it makes me very lonely and sometimes makes me feel alive and on top of the world.
Make of it what you will!!
THE OYSTER AND THE EAGLE
When the Gods created the Heavens and the Earth, they also created an oyster and an eagle.
The oyster was promised complete and absolute security. Its home, the sehll, is protection from its natural enemies. The oyster never has to leave its secure home in search of food. It only has to open its shell and enough food is provided for survival.
The oyster, however has no control over its destiny, it must spend its entire life drifting with the tide or attached to an immovable object at the bottom of the ocean. The oyster is destined never to go anywhere.
The Gods promised no such security to the eagle. Its only gift was that of keen eyesight. With this, he was to see opportunity and make the most of it. The eagle was told, “Go build your own life, you are the captain of your soul and the ruler of your destiny”.
The eagle built his home atop the highest peaks, to keep watch on his enemies below. He had to scream defiance to the winds and the rains and go in search of food for his young at times more than 100 miles a day.
Compared to the secure existence of the oyster, it would appear that the eagle leads a miserable life.
However, it is the eagle and not the oyster that is the international symbol of power, courage, freedom and victory and has inspired men since the Stone Age. The eagle served as the emblem of the might and unity of emperors, such as the Caesars, Charlemagne, Napoleon and the Russian Czars.
An eagle devouring a serpent is the national seal of Mexico and symbolises the triumph of good over evil.
The American bald eagle brandishing the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace represents strength, unity and liberty and was adopted as the presidential motif and seal of the United States of America.
You have been given the opportunitty of life, to control your destiny like that of the eagle or to drift with the tide like an oyster.
It is as you will it – so – what do you want to be, an oyster or an EAGLE?????
