February – The second month of the year!!!  It is also the shortest month of the year, and every four years encounters a leap year!!

So have you given up the new years resolutions that you made in Janaury when you where all determind to make this year different from the last??? Well my resolutions went out of the window when February hit!

So I dont know about you but February has been cold, it actually started to snow today but I don’t think that it will settle like last month, I glanced out of the window whilst typing this and it has started again, I hope it doesn’t settle I have to pick the children up from school and I am not used the new car that I picked up yesterday!! I say new car, its a new to me new car, if you get my meaning.

So what does February conjour up, well ultimatley it is the love month, Valentines day, but we will come back to that one! For me it is a present month which means I have to buy birthday presents, my mother and my nan, within two days of each other, which also makes them Pisces although only just for my mum, she is sometimes an Aquarius so this means that she is on the cusp. This also makes there birthstone Amethyst which for those of you that don’t know it is a purple colour, my nans favourite!

I am not sure what to buy them yet. Perhaps jewellery!! lol.

The 2nd of February is Candlemas day, this day is said to mark the midpoint of winter, lets hop this is true, I am not a great lover of the winter season! The very first sign of growth happens in February this is the sign of the snowdrop which is a symbol of hope. The name snowdrop does not mean drop of snow, it means drop as in eardrop the old word for earring. So this brings us to Valentines day – What is valentines day some would argue that is made up by the card companys and the florists as a way to make money, I find this a little cycnical I am of the love brigade so like to think that is a day to let people you love or admire or fancy exactly how you feel, and although it used to be anonymously these days we tend to let people know who we are!

A myth to do with Valentines – If a woman sees a robin flying over head on valentines it meant she would marry a sailor?!  If she saw a sparrow she would marry a poor person and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch she would marry a rich person. Every year I looked for a goldfinch but all I ever found was sparrows, they where everywhere still at least I will be happy!

Next in February we have shrove Tuesday this officially marks forty days before easter, these forty days are supposed to be a time of quiteness and fasting. This was the last day that we ate luxury foods. The following day is know as Ash Wednesday – a playground tradition is to carry a peice of twig from an ash tree in your pocket or down your sock. Anyone who didn’t have a peice had his or her feet trodden on. I don’t think with all the political correctness that is around today that this would be allowed to happen, just as well though!
